What is a musical scale?

A musical scale is an ordered series of notes that climbs from a starting note, called the tonic, to the same note an octave higher. What gives a scale its identity is not the notes themselves but the pattern of distances between them, a fixed sequence of intervals that stays the same no matter which note it starts on. Each note in the scale is a scale degree, numbered from the tonic. The runs 1 through 7 and arrives back at 1, and the same pattern started on any other note is still the major scale, just with a different tonic.

Rather than register a scale's intervals individually, our ears combine them into a single musical entity, and changing just a few degrees alters the color of the entire scale. Compare this with a . The two scales differ by only three degrees, but they feel different almost immediately. Scale ear training isn't learning how music theory defines a scale by its intervals, it's learning to recognize entire scales instantly and qualitatively.

What is a mode?

A mode is a unique scale created by selecting a new tonal center within an existing parent scale, while using the exact same set of pitches. That new pattern is a scale in its own right, a mode of the original, and a scale can have up to as many modes as it has notes.

The most common modes are the diatonic modes of the major scale, and each has its own name. The major scale itself is , and the rest of the modes starting at the remaining degrees of the major scale are , , , , , and . Each rotation puts the intervals in different places relative to the tonic, so each mode has its own recognizable color. The same concept is applied to melodic minor, harmonic minor, and double harmonic to produce some of the most important jazz and world scales.

What are major and minor scales?

The most fundamental distinction in Western music is the one between and , and it applies to scales just as much as it does to chord qualities. A major scale is true to its name and constructed of all the simple major and perfect intervals above the tonic. is constructed of all the simple minor and perfect intervals above the tonic. Why, then, is Aeolian the natural minor, when it has a major second, and not Phrygian?

Western music settled on Aeolian, with a major second, as its natural minor for two reasons. A minor second is among the sharpest dissonances among intervals, so placing one above the tonic challenges the stability of the scale's tonal center. A major second, by contrast, is stable enough to hold the tonal center. The other reason comes from one of the most common harmonic resolution patterns in Western music: a dominant chord on the fifth scale degree resolving to the tonic chord. In Phrygian the chord on the fifth degree is diminished, making it harmonically difficult to alter into a working dominant, whereas raising the seventh degree of the Aeolian mode creates a dominant which resolves naturally to the tonic minor chord.

In fact, dominant resolution is the reason we have three basic types of minor scales. Raising the minor seventh of a natural minor to a major seventh, as we did to solve the dominant problem above, creates . solves the same problem in a different way, and that's why the notes it uses depend on the direction it's traveling. raises both the sixth and seventh, so the top half of the scale climbs stepwise into the tonic just like a major scale. In a , it isn't resolving to the tonic, so the raised degrees revert and the scale descends in natural minor form. Jazz musicians sometimes keep the ascending form in both directions, referred to as the jazz minor scale, and a great deal of modern jazz harmony is built from its modes.

What are synonymous, relative, and enharmonic scales?

Scales that share a tonic and the same set of notes, like major and Ionian, and natural minor and Aeolian, are called synonymous or alias scales. Most synonyms exist because different traditions arrived at the same sets of pitches via different routes. For example, "major" is a scale named for the intervals it uses, while "Ionian" comes from the much older church-mode naming convention.

Scales that share the exact same set of notes but have different tonics, like and , are called relative scales. A minor is the relative minor of C major, and C major is the relative major of A minor. Because relative scales use the same notes, they share a key signature, and moving between relative scales is one of the most common key changes in Western music.

Scales that share the same absolute pitches but are spelled differently in notation, like and , are called enharmonically equivalent scales.

What are pentatonic and blues scales?

As the name implies, pentatonic scales are five-note subsets of larger scales. Anhemitonic pentatonic scales remove all the half-step intervals from the larger scale to produce highly stable, universally consonant pitch collections. With no natural tension or resolution points, pentatonic scales can be played in almost any sequence without clashing with the underlying harmonic structure. achieves this tension-free sound by removing the fourth and seventh from the major scale. arrives at the same stability by dropping the second and sixth from the natural minor scale.

and the Japanese pentatonics, , , and , drawn from koto tunings, make the opposite choice, instead isolating half-step intervals. Because traditional Japanese music relies on melody rather than chord progressions, these scales intentionally use half-steps to create internal tension and establish structural gravity. Pairing half-steps with wide intervallic leaps leaves the dissonance exposed, giving all four a sparse, angular color that is unmistakable when contrasted with Western anhemitonic pentatonics.

Blues scales add one chromatic passing note, or "blue note", to the major and minor pentatonics. inserts a diminished fifth between the perfect fourth and perfect fifth of minor pentatonic, and squeezes a minor third between the major second and major third of major pentatonic. In performed music, "blue notes" are often bent to microtonal pitches that fall between the fixed semitones of 12-tone equal temperament.

Why do we have symmetric scales?

Some scales are built by repeating specific interval patterns to intentionally obscure the tonal center. These symmetric scales are important because their lack of a single tonal center allows for rapid, symmetrical transpositions and creates structured tension that suspends traditional harmonic resolution.

The simplest example of a symmetrical scale is , which is built by repeating a single half-step interval. repeats a whole-step interval, which divides the octave into six equal intervals, giving the scale an almost rootless character. alternates between minor thirds and half steps, allowing its associated harmonies to be shifted symmetrically by major thirds. The two diminished scales alternate whole- and half-step intervals, resulting in harmonic tension that geometrically repeats every minor third. is the classic sound used to navigate diminished chords, and , its rotation, provides a structured framework for playing altered ninths over dominant chords before resolving back to diatonic harmony.

Jazz scales and the chords behind them

Many jazz scales can be understood through the chords they are played over. In this context, a jazz chord typically implies an extended thirteenth chord because stacking six thirds explicitly defines the quality of every degree of a seven-note scale. One of the clearest cases is , also known as the altered scale. A dominant seventh chord with every alteration it can carry is the "alt" chord of jazz notation written out stepwise: root, ♭9, ♯9, 3, ♯11, ♭13, ♭7. is the same concept applied to a dominant thirteenth with a raised eleventh.

The four bebop scales solve a rhythm problem rather than a harmony problem. adds a passing tone between the lowered seventh and the tonic so that a stream of eighth notes lands the chord tones on the strong beats. , , and each add one passing tone to their parent scale for the same reason.

Another family of scales gets its identity from the three-half-step gap we first heard in harmonic minor. is the fifth mode of harmonic minor, shifting that gap down between the second and third degrees to create the signature sound of flamenco, while is the fourth mode of harmonic minor, placing it mid-scale for the characteristic sound of klezmer clarinet lines. lowers the sixth of a major scale to create the three-half-step gap in an otherwise major landscape. features the gap in each half of the scale, producing the intensely chromatic sound associated with Middle Eastern and Balkan music. is the fourth mode of double harmonic, carrying that same double three-half-step gap into a minor frame.

Scales in real music

An isolated one-octave scale run is a deliberately clean stimulus: the whole scale, in order, and nothing else. Melodies in real music often use scale degrees out of order, borrow from outside the key, and emphasize specific pitches more than others. Recognizing the color of a raw scale is a foundation skill required to hear those same colors when a melody implies its scale in context. The same knowledge translates to harmonies. Because scales and chords are both built by stacking intervals, mastering scale colors makes chord quality recognition easier, and vice versa.
