What is a scale degree?
A scale degree is a note's position within a key, counted up from the tonic. In C major, C is the first degree, D the second, E the third, and so on up to B, the seventh. Pitches will feel different relative to different tonics, so the same E expressed as feels differently when expressed as .
Once a key is established, a listener doesn't need to measure the interval from the tonic to each new note. Notes simply sound like the third, or the leading tone, the same way a word doesn't sound like a string of letters that spell the word. Functional scale degree ear training is the practice of hearing where these relationships fit inside a key.
What are the names of scale degrees?
We commonly use three naming systems to label scale degrees:
Numbers. The notes of the scale are 1 through 7, and the chromatic degrees between them take a flat or sharp: ♭2, ♭3, ♯4, ♭6, ♭7.
Movable-do solfège. Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti. Do is always the tonic of the current key, and chromatic degrees have their own syllables. A raised degree changes its vowel to "i" (Di, Ri, Fi, Si, Li) and a lowered degree to "e" or "a" (Ra, Me, Se, Le, Te). Because Do moves with the key, movable do is a scale-degree system. Fixed do, in which Do is always the note C, names pitches instead of degrees. It's worth noting that many countries use variants of fixed-do solfège for standard musical notation, and movable-do can cause confusion when learning absolute pitch identities.
Technical names. Tonic, supertonic, mediant, subdominant, dominant, submediant, and leading tone, or subtonic when the seventh degree sits a whole step below the tonic. Each label describes the note's relationship to the tonic and the dominant rather than its distance in steps.
Minor keys split movable-do singers into two traditions. Do-based minor keeps Do on the tonic and lowers the third, sixth, and seventh, so a natural minor scale is sung Do Re Me Fa Sol Le Te and each syllable still names a degree. La-based minor keeps the syllables of the relative major, so the same scale is sung La Ti Do Re Mi Fa Sol. The tonic is La in La-based minor, and it's the norm in Kodály-influenced choral teaching. Do-based minor is more common where the goal is naming harmonic function. Neither is more correct, but a listener needs to know which one is in use.

Why does the seventh degree come in two forms in minor?
In a major key, we call the seventh the leading tone because it's and resolves up to it. The seventh in the natural minor is , and a whole step does not pull the same way toward the tonic.
The reason both exist in the same key is because a natural minor key needs its seventh raised by one half step to create a strong dominant resolution. A minor key therefore uses both sevenths, and which one sounds is a function of what the harmony is doing.
Where do the technical names come from?
The technical names for scale degrees are a map of how notes relate to the tonic and dominants. The is a perfect fifth above the tonic. The is a perfect fifth below the tonic, and transposed back into the octave above the tonic is the fourth scale degree. The is the midway point between tonic and dominant, the third scale degree. The is the midway point between the tonic and subdominant below the tonic, which tansposed back up is the sixth scale degree. The subtonic and supertonic sit on either side of the tonic, one whole step away.
Why are there two solfège traditions in minor?
Movable-do solfège is much older than the idea of a musical key. A six-note unit called a hexachord, using syllables taken from the successive opening pitches of a hymn, ut re mi fa sol la, has been taught since the middle ages. The syllables of a hexachord named positions inside a six-note unit rather than fixed pitches, and notably did not include a seventh. A melody that ran past six notes moved into an overlapping hexachord, and nothing in the system pointed at a tonic.
A seventh syllable was later added to complete the major scale, and do replaced ut. In France and Italy the system was fastened to specific pitches, which is fixed do. In nineteenth-century England movable do was rebuilt as a teaching method with do as the tonic of the major scale, with minor keeping its inherited la tonic. Do-based minor was later created to preserve the idea of do always being the tonic.
Importantly, neither tradition is a correction of the other. La-based minor keeps the relationship between relative keys audible in the syllables themselves, and do-based minor keeps the relationship between a syllable and a harmonic function.
How does a key get established?
Single notes in isolation have a height and absolute pitch, but lack a function. As soon as a tonal center is established, every note that follows can be heard in that context (Krumhansl & Shepard, 1979). A progression like firmly establishes the key because it contains all seven degrees of the major scale, sounds the leading tone resolving up to the tonic, and resolves from the dominant to the tonic. Some progressions like a and a don't resolve to the tonic, yet we can still clearly hear the key.
Not all scale degrees are equally stable within a key. The tonic is the tonal center, the fifth and third complete the tonic chord, the remaining diatonic degrees are less stable, and the chromatic degrees are the least. Unstable degrees are sometimes called tendency tones because, in context, they imply a resolution to a nearby, more stable, degree. , , and chromatic alterations can create stronger tendencies, like . Ultimately, we know the key not by consciously calculating the tonic, but by feeling this network of tendencies and tensions. Our ears infer the tonal center from the gravitational pull of the notes around it.
What is the difference between a scale degree and an interval?
Every scale degree is also an interval above the tonic. The fifth degree is a perfect fifth above the tonic, and ♭3 is a minor third above it, so when the lower note is the tonic the two vocabularies are the same. The primary difference between intervals and scale degrees is that a scale degree is always expressed in context relative to the tonic of a key. Intervals are isolated distances between two notes and do not have the concept of a tonal context. That's how and can sound so different in context, even though they are both the same minor second interval. Interval hearing measures distance, and degree hearing measures position.
Which scale degrees get confused?
There are two primary classes of errors in functional scale degree listening: proximity and shared stability. Proximity errors happen between chromatic alterations of the same degree, like 3 and ♭3, 4 and ♯4, 6 and ♭6, and 7 and ♭7, because they straddle the line between major and minor qualities. Stability errors happen when a listener who has not firmly established the tonic mistakes two stable resting points, like 1 and 5, even though they are a fifth apart. Register, however, is not usually a source of confusion because a scale degree played in any octave remains the exact same degree.
Scale degrees in real music
A melody can be expressed as a sequence of scale degrees, recognizable in any key. Musicians who sight-sing, transcribe, or improvise might think in degrees for the same reason. A phrase heard as 5 3 2 1 can be sung, written, or played in whatever key the moment calls for.
Hearing how a note relates to a key is the foundation of functional ear training, and interval practice isolates the distance between two pitches without requiring a tonal center. Scale-degree work maps interval distances onto a tonic to encode harmonic function.
