My neighbor — a beloved family friend — excitedly invited me over to see his brand-new HD TV. The moment I stepped into his living room and saw the football game playing on the TV, I looked at him and said, “That’s not HD.”
“It’s an HD TV. It says so right here in the manual.”
“The TV is HD,” I explained. “The picture isn’t.”
I investigated and quickly found the issue: the HD receiver was connected to his TV using the same outdated RCA cables we’d used with old VCRs. For those that have never heard of a VCR, it’s an archaic video playback device used by people like me back in the stone age. RCA supports a resolution of roughly 333×480, a far cry from the 1920×1080 you’d expect from HD. If you’ve never watched a VCR-quality signal on a 50-inch digital HD TV, imagine trying to watch a 13-inch analog TV from the ’80s through a foggy window.
After some back-and-forth, I went home to grab an HDMI cable. When I connected the cable and switched the input, the picture immediately came to life. The colors popped. My once-skeptical neighbor stared at the screen in disbelief and began to sob, “I can see the grass.”

You can do the same exercise with any song simply by remembering the song internally before pressing play.
Spot Song Similarities
Take note when a song “sounds like” or reminds you of another song, especially if you don’t know why. Maybe it’s the timbre or melody, but you’ll often find it’s the chords or key triggering that sense of familiarity. As you explore these connections, you’ll start recognizing pitch-related patterns in music that were previously hard to identify or explain.
Listen Actively, Not Passively
Pay attention to the structure of songs while you listen. Ask yourself: “What’s the root note? Is this in a major or minor key?” You don’t need to name the root note. Instead, simply focus on singing it aloud. Over time, these observations become second nature, helping you unlock deeper levels of musical understanding.
