It Started with Perfect Pitch

Matthew Clower is a career tech executive, veteran, and professionally trained musician who performed and toured playing piano, guitar, and vocals. When he found the peer-reviewed research demonstrating that perfect pitch can be learned in adulthood, he followed those protocols to develop his own, then built HarmoniQ around them.

For decades, the accepted belief was that perfect pitch could only be acquired in early childhood. That belief was based on flawed mid-century research and has since been definitively overturned. Independent peer-reviewed studies have demonstrated that adults can learn perfect pitch through structured training. Approximately 20% of participants in clinical programs have achieved results indistinguishable from lifelong possessors in as little as 8 weeks.

HarmoniQ operationalizes these methods, and for learners who want to follow a published protocol exactly as it was conducted, it offers those training configurations precisely as designed in the studies.

How It Became Ear Training

Many users who practiced consistently have reached the absolute pitch goals they set for themselves, and a larger group has reported related qualitative improvements to their experience with music generally. Enough learners asked for the same treatment of other ear training skills that it was difficult to overlook.

The first answer was a free perfect pitch test, the app's own assessment, open to everyone in a browser. It measures and reports generalization across timbres and octaves the way laboratories do. The test results and downloadable PDF include a semitone error distance chart and a confusion matrix, and every trial is exportable as a CSV.

The same approach has already been applied to intervals, chords, scales, scale degrees, chord progressions, and rhythmic and melodic dictation. Each topic is paired with a reference article documenting the topic and the research behind it. Ear training is a family of related skills, and the goal is to cover the whole family.
